Design Solution Inspiration

  • These posters are for protest but i wanna utilize the simplicity of the posters and how the message is portrayed as well. The color usage is also well done on these posters and attracts the attention of the viewers.

   Design Hypothesis:
·       Providing information about how the bilingual education program benefits ESL students with their families to connect to the ESL issues. This information can provide better understanding on what ESL students go through.
   Design Solution:
·       This proposed solution will facilitate the empathy and understanding to non-ESL people towards the benefits to Bilingual Education and its services to ESL students.
   The Reason Why:
·       The objective to this informational campaign would assist in supporting a better understanding of ESL students and associated negative perception with Bilingual Education. The design will provide constructive information on Bilingual Education and its benefits to all ESL students to all ESL students and program associates.

              Travel size (in hand)
User/ Environment:
              Parents
              Students
              Community
              Schools: elementary to college
              Community centers
              Community houses
Needs it fulfills:
Concerns with the children of the parents
Students struggling in school would want the information that the campaign provides
For the community, everyone should know what types of programs are offered to the community.
For schools, concerned students and parents would be interested on how to improve their English proficiency.
Comparative Analysis
SB 1070
A.    SB 1070 is a legislative act in the U.S. state of Arizona that is the broadest and strictest anti-illegal immigration measure in decades.
B.    There was many campaigns going against the SB 1070 to give “ brown people” a chance to provide for their families (specifically in Arizona).
C.    The act makes it a state misdemeanor crime for an alien to be in Arizona without carrying registration documents required by federal law, authorizes state and local law enforcement of federal immigration laws, and cracks down on those sheltering, hiring and transporting illegal aliens.

HB 2281
HB 2281 prohibits schools from offering courses at any grade level that advocate ethnic solidarity, promote overthrow of the US government, or cater to specific ethnic groups—regulations which will dismantle the state's popular Mexican-American studies programs.
This affects the students in Arizona more than the students in the Bay Area but it is a close comparative analysis.

Personas/Scenarios

Guttierez Family

Javier Guttierez

Age: 40

Gender: Male

Javier is a father of three wonderful children and a husband to his beautiful wife.

He works for a roofing company due his lack of education.

He was born and raised in Mexico. He came to the United States so that his family can have a better future and so he can work to put food on the table.

Supports his better half while she goes to school to learn English.

Scenario:

  •         Javier has to worry about the education that his family is receiving. He came to the United States in order for his family to have a better life by adapting to the U.S. He wants the best for his children because he did not get much education due to lack of money in his house. He was raised in a poor home and had to work at an early age to put some food on the table. He does not want his children to go thru the same thing and that is why he brought his family to the US to have a better academic future; possibly a career as well. He encouraged his wife to get into school to learn English so that she can help the children with their academics and for her to possibly get a better job. With the knowledge of English, she could possibly get a better job.

Rosa Guttierez
Age: 35

Rosa is a mother of three kids and a wife to a loving husband.

She goes to school to learn English.

When she is not at school, she is at home taking care of the children and their needs.

  •       Rosa and Javier got married at a young age so Rosa did not get the education she needed as well. She moved to the United States with Javier and their first born to get a better life. They now have three children that they have to think of their future academically. Rosa wants the best education for her children so they can be successful later in their life. She was encouraged to take English classes by her husband so that she would be able to help their children on homework and so that she had more possibilities for jobs. She truly likes learning English each day and understands a little of her children’s homework.

Baby Jesse Guttierez

Jesse needs attention twenty- four hours of the day from his parents.

Mom and Dad have to switch on who watches the Jesse based on work and school schedules.

Needs to be carried in a stroller since he is too young to walk.

When he is awake he likes to be held

He gets cranky when she is hungry and will often cry very loud high pitch screams.
Scenario:
  • Jesse’s case, he still has his whole future ahead of him. However, the education he receives is crucial because as he grows, his mind is like a sponge. His learning abilities is more vulnerable in his youth. With the education he receives, it could determine whether he becomes bilingual or just continues with his native language and is lost in the English academics.

Marcos Guttierez

Gender: Male

Marcos is the second oldest child of the family.

He’s in middle school and strives to learn in school

He mostly speaks Spanish because at home, Spanish is the only language used to communicate to each other due to the lack of English his parents know.
Scenario:
  •       Marcos strives to learn in school, but he struggles in his homework because his parents dont understand English. He was given a personal tutor because the teacher could not slow down the class to help him one on one. Even with the personal tutor, he feels that he is not in the same level in academics with his student peers.

Chayanne Guttierez
Age: 14

Gender: female

Chayanne is the oldest child of the family.

She is an 8th grader in the same middle school that her brother is in

He mostly speaks Spanish because at home, Spanish is the only language used to communicate to each other due to the lack of English his parents know.

When she came to the US as a baby with her parents, she had trouble adapting to the US schools and was labeled ELL student.

She was separated from her classmates when she really just wanted to be just like them and learn like them.
Scenario:
  • When she came to the US as a baby with her parents, she had trouble adapting to the US schools and was labeled ELL student. She was separated from her classmates when she really just wanted to be just like them and learn like them. Just like her brother, she struggles in her homework and she doesnt feel that she is prepared for high school. She wonders if she would get the same treatment in high school.

The three problematic personas I chose were Rosa, Marcos, and Chayanne:

  •        These three personas all have a difficulty with English and are segregated from other classmates they study with. They have been stereotyped due to their lack of English proficiency and this is why this campaign would help. The campaign would inform the personas about the bilingual education program and how to make others understand that this program will help ESL students advance to their level in academics. For the environmental interactions, this campaign could be displayed in every school and community center that could inform ESL oriented families about the bilingual education program.

Class Activity: July 9, 2013

Today we looked over personas, timelines, surveys and the 10 part research project outline. Then we did a group activity with making a list of all the objects in purses, backpacks, pockets and clothes.
It looks as though the letter C was the most popular letter within the class.
Then we did what was inclusive and exclusive for the class in general and came up with this list:

This shows that some objects or facts can conflict with brand names or categories that can coincide with another.

June 27 Class activity

In class, we did this design thinking packet that helps two people figure out each others needs and come up with the solution for them. I had the liberty to work with Cindy as my partner. It was interesting to find out that she likes to keep her IDs from California and her homeland in her wallet. She also likes to keep a fortune card from her homeland that will protect her from harm. She mentioned how she will be traveling to Hong Kong for her masters degree and that is what made me come up with the solution I proposed.
This is how I drew out the scenario ( in stick figure form due to time limit) of how Cindy would need my product for her trip in order to keep her belonging safe.
For my solution prototype, I created a transportable flip open bag with pockets to store her IDs and her other cards. Due to time limit, the bag came out crooked and broken in some parts. The picture above represents when the bag would flip open.
This picture represents when the bag is closed and latched. The green pipe cleaner is supposed to represent a lock for the bag but unfortunately, I failed at that attempt. I try to put a smile design face in the front to cheer up Cindy on her travels.
This is Cindy wearing the prototype bag along with the shoulder strap that I made with it.
Based off of Cindy's observation from the materials in my wallet, made me a miniature bag that will hold my phone and credit cards in the inside. On the outside, she made a specific card pocket for my season pass to Six Flags. She did an amazing job on it and I liked the strap that came with it.
